Cashmere is a textile that needs to be treated very carefully. You cannot simply throw a cashmere sweater along with other clothes into the washing machine. It needs to be taken care of in a very special way. However, this proper care is well worth it. Years from purchase, the sweater will look as good as new, and will not change its color, nor the shape. It will look the same way it did when you bought it.
Cashmere sustains its great properties mostly when it is aired out. Therefore, it is important that you do not wear your sweater multiple days in a row. Ideally, after a day of wearing it, you should let it rest for a day.
Cashmere should be washed in a lukewarm water, with the temperature reaching a maximum of 20 °C. Washing by hand is ideal, however, it is also possible to wash it in the washing machine as long as the mode is set to wool washing.
We recommend washing by hand, and here we are providing a guide that easily describes how to do it:
- 1. Fill in your washbasin with a lukewarm water, not exceeding 20 °C. Add in a detergent for washing delicate fabrics, or an ordinary baby shampoo. Then, stir up the water with your hand to create soap bubbles. Afterwards, soak the cashmere sweater in the water.
- 2. Stir the sweater in the water multiple times on both sides. After it has been sufficiently washed, drain the water, fill it the basin with lukewarm water again, and repeat the stirring step.
- 3. If all the soap bubbles have disappeared from the water, drain the basin. Carefully press the water out of the sweater very gently. Do not try to wring it out. Be very careful not to deform the sweater.
- 4. After the water has been pressed out, spread out the sweater on an absorbent towel and put it into its normal shape. Slowly start rolling up the towel in order to absorb the remaining water. You may also press it a little bit, but do not let it stay in the rolled up state for too long.
- 5. When you are finished with washing the sweater, do not let it dry out in direct sunlight or, even worse, in a dryer. This could result in irreversible changes in the structure of the fabric. The sweater could shrink and lose its positive properties. You do not need to iron the sweater.
